What is External Wall Insulation?

External wall insulation (EWI) is a layer of insulation which is secured, using adhesive and mechanical fixings, to the exterior walls of your property.

In an age of rising energy costs, the majority of householders are burning money unnecessarily.

Older homes, not built to modern energy efficiency standards, are unable to retain heat; the Carbon Trust states that up to 45 percent of heat can escape through walls and into the environment.

Developed across Europe over the past 40 years, EWI systems markedly improve the energy efficiency of existing buildings such as solid wall or non-traditionally constructed homes which are unsuitable for cavity wall insulation.

Using a formulation of mineral wool, wood fibres and polystyrene, EWI acts as a thermal jacket around the building.  The process is finished with a breathable, waterproof render which comes in a range of finishes, including a smooth, coloured surface, and pebbledash. ‘EWI is suitable for the majority of the UK’s older properties,’ says Warmer Homes’ director Daniel Dwan. ‘As well as upgrading the façade of buildings, we frequently fit external wall insulation to the rear of period buildings, be it Victorian or Art Deco, mid-terrace or detached.

‘This solution may be appropriate in situations where the homeowner wishes to retain the original façade of their property while enjoying the significant financial and energy savings afforded by external wall insulation.

‘Studies show that a properly-fitted EWI system delivers the best results compared with other forms of wall insulation.’

The finished surface is maintenance-free, providing a colour-fast, protective barrier which solves cracked and blown render issues, and seals your home against the elements.

Warmer Homes are leading, UK-wide specialists in the installation of external wall insulation.  We are one of the few approved applicators of External Insulated Render Systems for all leading system manufacturers.
